Rwanda Sees Peaceful New Year Celebrations, No Road Accidents Reported

Rwanda’s New Year celebrations in 2025 were marked by peace and safety. The Rwanda National Police reported no road accidents during the celebrations, except for a few incidents involving drivers who were caught under the influence of alcohol.

According to Police Spokesperson, ACP Boniface Rutikanga, the transition into the new year went smoothly. “There were no fatalities or injuries. It was a peaceful start to 2025,” he said.

While the celebrations were calm, 38 people were arrested for violent crimes, including assault and bodily harm, across the country. However, the overall atmosphere was one of safety and order, thanks to strict security measures.

ACP Rutikanga praised the efforts of the Police and other security agencies. “Together with local leaders, we ensured every Rwandan could celebrate the New Year safely. There were no major incidents reported,” he explained.

He also thanked the youth volunteers who played a key role in maintaining order during the celebrations. These volunteers were present at churches, event venues, and bus stations, helping people enjoy the festivities safely.

“The volunteers were especially helpful where fireworks were set off to mark the New Year. They ensured everything went smoothly, without any mistakes or overcrowding,” ACP Rutikanga added.

Before the celebrations, the Police had issued safety messages, urging Rwandans to stay calm, respect the law, and avoid criminal behavior. According to ACP Rutikanga, the public followed these instructions well, contributing to a peaceful environment.

He also mentioned that those who broke the rules were given strong warnings. They had been advised to avoid driving after drinking, and the authorities made sure this message was heard.
