Rwandan Peacekeepers Lead Malaria Prevention Campaign in South Sudan

Rwandan peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have joined the Rwandan community in South Sudan and the Society for Family Health (SHF) to conduct a malaria prevention campaign at the Mangateen refugee camp in Juba.

The initiative aimed to promote hygiene and educate residents on how to prevent malaria, which remains one of the leading health challenges in the camp.

Activities included clearing bushes, draining stagnant water, and cleaning areas where mosquitoes breed. The team also distributed mosquito repellents and raised awareness about proper sanitation and preventive measures.

Col. Leodomir Uwizeyimana, commander of the Rwanbatt-3 contingent, praised the collaboration between peacekeepers and local residents. He urged the community to maintain cleanliness and eliminate mosquito breeding sites to reduce the risk of malaria infections.

Simon Khan Lok, the manager of the Mangateen camp, welcomed the support, saying the joint effort is helping improve public health by educating residents and providing them with essential protection materials.

Located on the outskirts of Juba, the Mangateen camp continues to battle high malaria infection rates. The outreach highlighted the ongoing commitment of Rwandan peacekeepers and their partners to improving the well-being of vulnerable communities in South Sudan.
