Rwanda’s Forensic Institute (RFI), a national center specializing in scientific and technical evidence for the justice system, says it served clients from 49 countries in the past year, highlighting growing international confidence in Rwanda’s justice system.
Dr. Charles Karangwa, RFI’s Director General, said the institute has steadily expanded its services while helping thousands of Rwandans access justice.
“Last year, clients from 49 countries sought services here in Rwanda, which reflects their trust in our justice system and confidence in our government,” Karangwa said. “This includes both African nations and developed countries whose citizens rely on our services.”
RFI provides a wide range of forensic services, with DNA testing among the most requested. These tests help determine family relationships for travel purposes, as well as verify the authenticity of documents. Other frequently requested services, particularly by African countries, include tests for substances that may have contaminated people.
Karangwa said the institute has now received requests to open branches in 12 countries, with discussions ongoing about further expansion.
In addition to serving foreign clients, RFI is working to raise awareness among Rwandan parents about the importance of early detection of drug use among children. “Parents should bring children to us for testing if they suspect drug use, so appropriate care can be provided early before serious consequences arise,” Karangwa said.
Over the past year, RFI has resolved around 96,000 cases using advanced scientific evidence, a milestone Karangwa said reflects both the institute’s growing capacity and its impact on justice delivery in Rwanda.
The institute’s services are increasingly recognized as reliable and impartial, making Rwanda a hub for forensic testing in the region. Karangwa emphasized that RFI aims to combine scientific rigor with practical applications to support both local and international clients.
“Through the use of innovative evidence, we ensure justice is served while building confidence in our legal system,” he said.
RFI’s growing international reputation demonstrates Rwanda’s commitment to scientific and technological approaches in law enforcement, and its role as a regional leader in forensic services.
