Africa’s forests are a lifeline for communities, biodiversity, and the fight against climate change. Recognizing the crucial role young people play in preserving and managing these natural resources, the African Forest Forum (AFF), in partnership with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), has launched AfricanYouth4Forests (AY4F)—a dynamic virtual community designed to empower young professionals, students, and entrepreneurs in the forestry sector.
This innovative Community of Practice is more than just an online platform; it’s a movement. It provides a space where Africa’s youth can connect, share knowledge, and collaborate on real-world solutions to enhance forest conservation, tackle climate challenges, and tap into green economy opportunities.
A Space for Collaboration and Growth Launched from March 31 to April 11, 2025, AY4F will host live discussions from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM Nairobi Time (09:00 AM – 11:00 AM GMT) on the Howspace platform. The first week will feature interactive chat discussions, followed by live webinars in the second week—creating an engaging, interactive learning experience for participants.
A Call to Action from Forestry Leaders Forestry experts and environmental leaders are championing the initiative as a game-changer for Africa’s youth.
Prof. Labode Popoola, Executive Secretary-CEO of AFF, emphasized the initiative’s importance: “We recognize the critical role that young people play in shaping the future of Africa’s forests and tree resources. By providing a dynamic and inclusive space for engagement, we are fostering the next generation of forestry leaders and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to drive positive change.”
Dr. Jane Njuguna, CEO of KEFRI, highlighted the value of the virtual community: “We are proud to collaborate with AFF and SLU on this initiative, which empowers youth to take an active role in environmental stewardship and the sustainable management of our forests.”
Sara Gräslund, Head of SLU Global, underscored the importance of youth engagement in forestry: “Africa’s youth is crucial in rethinking sustainable forest management. There are great opportunities in working together with young professionals and students to drive climate resilience, unlock green economy opportunities, and shape the future of forests.”
An Opportunity for Young Changemakers AY4F aligns with AFF’s broader mission to promote sustainable forest management while ensuring Africa’s forests continue to provide essential ecological, social, and economic benefits. Supported by SLU and KEFRI, the initiative will foster research collaborations, mentorship programs, networking, and policy dialogues—empowering the next generation of environmental leaders.
Young changemakers, students, educators, activists, scientists, and policymakers in the forestry sector are invited to join AY4F and be part of this transformative journey toward a greener, more sustainable Africa.
Background: Why AfricanYouth4Forests Matters
Africa’s forests are not just about trees; they are intertwined with livelihoods, climate stability, and economic potential. The AfricanYouth4Forests (AY4F) initiative aims to bridge the gap between scientific research and youth-led action, ensuring the continent’s natural resources are protected for future generations.
Initially focusing on Kenya and Cameroon, the initiative is set to expand across Africa through digital platforms, workshops, discussion forums, and international collaborations. By fostering exchanges between young people and researchers, AY4F encourages meaningful engagement with forestry challenges and opportunities, reinforcing the commitment to sustainable forest management.
With guidance from a dedicated Youth Advisory Council (YAC), AY4F ensures that young voices are heard in shaping policies and practices for Africa’s forests. This is more than a platform—it’s a launchpad for the next generation of environmental stewards.
