Rwanda Police Trainees Urged to Uphold National Unity During Heroes’ Mausoleum Visit

A group of 145 officers completing their training at the Rwanda National Police Training School in Gishari were urged Thursday to uphold the values of national unity, which officials said are the legacy of the country’s ancestors.

The officers, concluding the Police Tactical Command Course designed to strengthen leadership and decision-making skills, visited the Heroes’ Mausoleum in Remera, Gasabo District, where they learned about the history and sacrifices of Rwanda’s national heroes.

Officials told the trainees that choosing a career in security services and visiting the mausoleum represents a commitment to heroism. Nicolas Rwaka, director of research at the Rwanda National Heroes, Medals, and Commendation Rings Authority (CHENO), said unity is essential to national strength.

“The value of Rwandan unity must be preserved,” Rwaka said. “Anyone who sows division threatens the country. Whenever we fail to uphold unity, we betray the covenant established by our ancestors.”

Rwaka highlighted that true heroes are selfless and dedicated to the greater good. He described the Heroes’ Mausoleum as a place that honors Rwandans’ courage and commitment to service.

After the visit, trainees expressed gratitude for the lessons and pledged to support national unity and oppose all forms of discrimination. They also committed to collaborating in national development and seeking guidance when needed.

CHENO Executive Secretary Nkusi Déo praised the officers’ commitment, saying the mausoleum visit reinforced their professional responsibilities. He added that understanding their duties and learning from national heroes helps them perform more effectively in their roles.

“Heroes are defined by integrity, courage, patriotism, selflessness, and a commitment to the common good,” Nkusi said. “They serve as examples of truthfulness, humanity, and moral leadership.”

Rwanda recognizes several categories of heroes:

  • Imanzi: The highest-ranking heroes, known for exceptional deeds marked by selflessness and impact.

  • Imena: Pioneering heroes whose extraordinary actions benefit the nation and set high standards.

  • Ingenzi: Heroes recognized for significant contributions that demonstrate selflessness and influence.
