Rwanda has reached an important milestone in healthcare. Since 2023, 44 patients have received kidney transplants within the country. This marks a huge leap forward in the nation’s healthcare services.
Previously, Rwandans needing kidney transplants had to travel abroad, often to India, where the procedure could cost between $7,400 and $14,000. Now, patients can receive this life-saving treatment at King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda, and all 44 patients who underwent the procedure are doing well.
Dr. Yvan Butera, Minister of State for Health shared the good news during a discussion with members of the Parliamentary Committee on Governance, Gender, and Family Affairs on March 6, 2025. He explained that kidney transplants in Rwanda began in May 2023. Since then, the country has taken major steps to improve healthcare services.

But the kidney transplant milestone is just the beginning. Rwanda has also made significant progress in other medical fields. Dr. Butera shared that since 2022, 356 children and 185 adults have undergone heart surgeries in Rwanda. These advanced treatments were once only available abroad, but now Rwandans can access them at home.
Another important change has been the reduction in the cost of dialysis treatments. In the past, dialysis could cost as much as 150,000 Rwandan Francs per session. Now, the cost has dropped to between 45,000 and 75,000 Rwandan Francs. The government plans to make it even more affordable by the end of the year.
The price of medical imaging, like CT scans and MRIs, has also decreased by 64%. This is making it easier for more people to get the tests they need without going bankrupt.
These improvements are part of a larger effort by the government to improve healthcare. In January 2025, Rwanda’s Cabinet approved new measures to expand access to medical services, including cancer care, kidney and heart surgeries, and advanced surgeries using modern technology.
Rwanda’s health insurance program, Mutuelle de Santé, is also growing. The goal is to ensure that more Rwandans can get affordable healthcare when they need it.
These strides in healthcare are a testament to the country’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its people. With these advancements, Rwanda is ensuring that its citizens receive the care they deserve, all without leaving the country.
