Rwanda’s industrial output up 5% in March 2025, stats agency reports

Rwanda’s industrial output rose by 5% in March 2025 compared to the same month last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.

The increase was detailed in the latest Index of Industrial Production (IIP) report released May 5. The agency also noted that industrial production grew by 9.4% over the course of 2024.

In March, mining and quarrying production increased by 4.1%, manufacturing rose by 1.7%, electricity output surged by 23.2%, and water and sanitation services grew by 1.4%.

Within the 1.7% growth in manufacturing, food processing and value addition activities rose by 7.8%, while the production of household goods and similar items climbed 19.3%.

Despite the overall growth, some sectors recorded declines. Production in the leather and textiles sector fell by 11.2%, and output in the wood, paper and printing industries dropped by 8.2%.

A previous NISR report released in January showed that industrial output in November 2024 rose 14.7% year over year.

According to official figures, Rwanda’s industrial production has tripled since 2017, increasing from 591 billion Rwandan francs to 1.68 trillion francs. The growth is largely attributed to the country’s efforts to add value to local products.

During the 2023–2024 fiscal year, the industrial sector contributed just over 495 billion francs in tax revenue, according to the report.
