RwandAir on Monday launched new flights to Zanzibar, Tanzania, and resumed service to Mombasa, Kenya, expanding its East African network.
A Boeing B737-800NG departed Kigali International Airport for Zanzibar to inaugurate the new route. Upon arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, the aircraft received a traditional water salute, a ceremony commonly used to welcome new aircraft or celebrate the opening of new routes.
The airline’s return to Mombasa marks its first service there since 2019. The Zanzibar route is new, bringing RwandAir’s destinations to three in Tanzania and two in Kenya.
In October, RwandAir CEO Yvonne Makolo said the expansion reflects the company’s wider growth strategy. “Returning to Mombasa and launching service to Zanzibar is another step in our expansion journey,” she said. “By broadening our reach in East Africa, we can better position Kigali as a key hub, offer customers more opportunities to explore the region, and strengthen trade, tourism and regional cooperation.”
RwandAir will operate the Zanzibar–Mombasa route four times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
