Rwanda’s Intore Dance Joins UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List

Rwanda’s cherished Intore dance has recently earned a prestigious place on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. This recognition was granted during the 19th General Assembly of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Paraguay.

The Intore dance, known for its powerful rhythms and vibrant performances, now stands alongside other cultural traditions from around the world, including fish farming techniques from Korea, the art of painting from Serbia, and the rose-flower arranging tradition from Saudi Arabia. Other practices like soap-making from Palestine and the Guarania music of Paraguay also joined the list.

This honor follows a series of important recognitions for Rwanda by UNESCO, including the addition of the Kigali Genocide Memorial, along with those at Bisesero, Murambi, and Nyamata, as well as Nyungwe National Park, to the World Heritage list just a year earlier. Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage continues to shine globally, preserving history and traditions for future generations.
