Rwanda’s Aviation Training Hub Gains Global Recognition, Expands Reach Across Africa

The Rwanda Civil Aviation Training and Innovation Centre (RCATIC) is making significant strides in enhancing aviation regulatory training and addressing the global skills gap in the industry.

At the recent Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS), Silas Udahemuka, the Director General of the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA), shared the vision of RCATIC, which aims to become one of Africa’s leading aviation training institutions. Udahemuka highlighted that RCATIC is pivotal in shaping the future of the aviation industry in Rwanda and across the continent.

“Inaugurated in June 2024, RCATIC marks a new chapter for aviation training in Rwanda,” said Udahemuka. “Our goal is to not only meet local needs but also contribute to a broader regional and global vision for aviation excellence.”

In just a few months since its opening, the centre has gained international recognition, recently being awarded the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) TRAINAIR Plus Bronze membership in November. The formal recognition of this milestone will take place during a signing ceremony at the GISS event.

ICAO accreditation is seen as essential for gaining access to the world’s leading expertise in aviation, and RCATIC is already training an average of 25 students from across Africa each month. As Rwanda’s aviation sector continues to grow, the centre is expanding its reach to further enhance safety compliance and workforce development in the region.

Udahemuka also emphasized the importance of incorporating innovation into aviation training. “This is the right time to integrate emerging technologies,” he explained. “Our institution’s name reflects our commitment to innovation. Embracing artificial intelligence, unmanned aircraft systems, and other cutting-edge technologies is crucial for any aviation organization’s success.”

He went on to discuss the key goals of RCATIC and Rwanda’s broader aviation sector. “We are focused on aligning our efforts toward sustainable aviation practices, particularly reducing carbon emissions, advancing sustainable aviation fuels, and exploring new solutions that will define the future of the industry.”

The GISS event has provided an ideal platform for the RCAA to collaborate with global aviation leaders, share insights, and push forward these critical goals. Alongside its ICAO agreement, RCATIC is expected to sign several additional collaborations with other leading aviation training organizations this week, further expanding its impact and reach.

With these new partnerships and continued innovation, RCATIC is well on its way to becoming a driving force in the global aviation landscape, ensuring Rwanda’s growing aviation sector remains at the forefront of industry developments.
