Rwanda Police Arrest Four for Marijuana Trafficking in Kigali

The Rwanda National Police’s Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) has arrested four people suspected of possessing and selling 876 packets of marijuana in Kigali, officials said.

Kigali City Police spokesperson, CIP Wellars Gahonzire, said the arrests took place in Kinyinya and Gisozi sectors of Gasabo District. Authorities seized 17,500 Rwandan francs linked to drug sales.

Nyandwi Celestin was caught riding a motorcycle carrying 300 packets of marijuana belonging to Muyizere Moise. On September 2, Richard Iradukunda was arrested in Gisozi Sector with marijuana worth 17,500 francs, while Anitha Manizabayo was caught with 178 packets in Kinyinya Sector.

“All the suspects admitted to regularly selling marijuana, and this was not their first offense,” CIP Gahonzire said. He added that the drugs originated from Rulindo District and were brought to Kigali for distribution.

All four suspects, aged between 25 and 34, are being held at Gisozi and Kinyinya police stations pending prosecution for drug trafficking.

The police thanked residents who provided information leading to the arrests and urged the public to report anyone involved in narcotics. Authorities also warned against drug use, trafficking, or smuggling, stressing that violators face severe penalties.

Under Rwandan law, marijuana is classified as a major narcotic. Convicted individuals face life imprisonment and fines ranging from 20 million to 30 million Rwandan francs.
