Rusizi District Launches Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence

Rusizi District leadership is calling on residents to actively fight and prevent all forms of violence. The focus is on gender-based violence, especially against women and girls. Some people still hide these acts and exploit others in families. Authorities remind everyone that hiding abuse is illegal, and they urge people to report it immediately.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign began on November 25. While it focuses on violence against women and girls, it also addresses abuse of men and boys. The campaign will spread across all sectors of the district.

This initiative is a partnership with Enabel, the Belgian development agency. Dr. Innocent Turate from Enabel emphasized that fighting violence is everyone’s responsibility. He shared that 37% of women and girls over 15 years old have experienced violence. Last year, over 5,600 children under 18 were impregnated.

Mucyo Aline, a counselor at the Isange One Stop Center in Gihundwe, reported alarming statistics. In 2023-2024, the center received 491 cases of abuse. These included women, men, and children. Many cases, however, are hidden within families. Aline stressed that everyone must take responsibility to address this issue.

Rukundo Jean Bosco from the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) discussed the legal consequences of sexual abuse. He explained that offenders face severe penalties. Those who abuse children under 14 could face life imprisonment. Rukundo urged people to learn the laws and report any abuse. He also encouraged parents to keep a close eye on their children.

Ujeneza Olive, deputy coordinator of the National Women’s Council in Rusizi, spoke about the impact of violence on well-being. She emphasized that no one should suffer violence, whether man, woman, or child. The Women’s Council is particularly focused on helping women and girls.

Nyiranshuti Béatrice, a local resident, shared that the campaign opened their eyes to the issue. She promised that they would no longer tolerate violence in their families. Instead, they will report it immediately.

Uwimana Monique, acting vice mayor of Rusizi, acknowledged that some people still hesitate to report violence. She called for more collaboration to stop this practice. Awareness campaigns will help educate students and the community.

Rusizi District is committed to creating a safe environment for all. The district continues to fight gender-based violence through education, legal action, and community involvement.
