Police Conduct Security Drill Ahead of World Cycling Championship

With just 17 days to go before Rwanda hosts the UCI Road World Championships for the first time in Africa, the Rwanda National Police have stepped up preparations by conducting their third security drill ahead of the event.

The exercise took place on September 4 along the 40-Onatracom route, a key section of the championship course scheduled for September 21–28. Previous drills were held in Kicukiro and at the police headquarters in Kacyiru.

“The primary goal of these drills is to test our readiness in setting up road barriers, managing pedestrian access, securing key routes, deploying police officers and volunteers, and coordinating support for cyclists and accompanying motorbikes,” said ACP Boniface Rutikanga, police spokesperson. “We aim to perform these tasks efficiently so as not to disrupt public movement.”

Rutikanga emphasized that the drills also focus on the safety of athletes, spectators, and Rwandans watching the event. “Security will be maintained along the race route and at surrounding areas, ensuring a safe and smooth experience for everyone,” he said.

Alexia Uwitonze, coordinator of youth volunteers in Kigali, said volunteers are fully prepared to assist and have been briefed on the course. “We are thrilled that Rwanda is hosting this championship. It’s an important opportunity for us as youth and will provide invaluable experience,” she said.

Spectators who observed the drill expressed confidence in the police. “This exercise shows us what to expect during the race. I trust the police to manage security effectively,” said Amani Nzabahimana.

The World Championship is expected to attract over 5,000 officials, while more than 15,000 visitors will come to Rwanda during the eight-day event. Some 700 journalists from 124 countries and 80 television networks will cover the competition, which will be broadcast to over 300 million cycling fans worldwide.
