Gabiro Agribusiness Hub Creates Jobs, Boosts Livelihoods in Nyagatare District

In Karangazi Sector, Nyagatare District, more than 600 residents are finding hope and economic stability through the Gabiro Agribusiness Hub, a government-initiated farming project that has transformed idle land into a thriving agricultural center.

The project, which leases 500 hectares of land to investors like Kinvest Company, has created jobs that help local residents escape unemployment and improve their livelihoods. So far, 170 hectares have been cultivated, producing fruits, vegetables, and spices with promising yields.

Muteteri Violette, a casual laborer picking green beans, said the work has been life-changing. “Before, farmers here earned only about 1,000 Rwandan francs a day, and jobs were scarce. Now I make 15,000 francs a week, which helps me support my family,” she said.

Violette and her husband both work at the farm, earning enough to buy clothes and livestock for their children. “We’ve been able to purchase small animals, so our home is more secure financially,” she added.

Byagatonda Emmy, a security guard at the farm, said the steady income has allowed him to save and invest. “In five months, I bought a plot of land. I believe continuing here will help me build a better future,” he said.

Nyagatare District Mayor Stephen Gasana called the project a “major opportunity” for the community. “Gabiro Agribusiness Hub not only creates jobs but also boosts food security locally and nationally,” he said. “We urge residents to seize this opportunity and save for the future.”

Current production averages 4 tons per hectare of passion fruit, 3 tons of green beans, and 2 tons of chili peppers weekly.

As Gabiro Agribusiness Hub expands, it is becoming a vital engine of economic growth and social transformation in Rwanda’s Eastern Province.
