Ecobank Rwanda Launches Digital Loan Service for Merchants

Ecobank Rwanda has introduced the Ecobank Merchant Cash Advance (EMCA) program, offering merchants loans of up to Rwf 28 million without requiring collateral.

The service targets businesses that use POS and Momo Pay technology in their daily operations, providing a flexible solution that grows with the merchant’s activity. According to Ecobank, the more a business uses the platform, the higher the loan it can access over time.

Dieudonne Bigirimana, Head of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) at Ecobank Rwanda, said the initiative is part of the bank’s push to expand digital services and ensure faster, more accessible financial solutions.

“Ecobank prioritizes technology as a hub for customers to access financial services wherever they are, without spending time visiting a branch or relying on traditional cash-based methods,” Bigirimana said.

Merchants applying for the loan undergo an assessment of their account activity to ensure eligibility. Other requirements include being a client of Ecobank for at least three months, holding a Rwanda Development Board (RDB) certificate, and having conducted business operations for at least 12 months.

Ecobank is a pan-African bank with a reputation for innovative financial services, particularly digital solutions. It operates in 33 countries across Africa, including Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
