Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva on Monday encouraged residents of Nyaruguru District to intensify efforts in agriculture, saying their progress makes President Paul Kagame proud.
Speaking at the launch of the 2026A agricultural season in the Urwonjya marshland, Nyagisozi sector, Nsengiyumva urged farmers to work harder to increase productivity and improve livelihoods.
“Yields now stand at about five tons per hectare. If we work better, we can reach 10 tons per hectare,” he said. “To achieve food security, every arable plot should be cultivated, whether in marshlands or on hills.”
The prime minister reminded farmers to plant improved seeds, use both organic and chemical fertilizers, and adopt irrigation practices to prepare for climate change impacts. He added that Rwanda aims to double its agricultural output in the coming years.
Nsengiyumva called on ministers in charge of agriculture to work closely with cooperatives and local farmers to ensure government strategies translate into increased household incomes.
“When you are happy, the President is happy,” he told residents. “You should continue to make him proud by working together to fight poverty.”
During his two-day tour of the Southern Province, Nsengiyumva also visited Mata Tea Company in Mata sector to assess progress in tea production and value addition. Rwanda is seeking to expand tea exports as part of its broader drive to boost foreign exchange earnings.
Officials say improving crop yields and promoting agro-processing are central to government plans for rural transformation and economic growth.
