Chief Ombudsman Urges Citizens to Trust Court Decisions and Embrace Mediation

In a call for greater trust in the legal system, Chief Ombudsman Nirere Madeleine urged Rwandans to accept court rulings and stop resisting them. She made the appeal during the launch of a new program aimed at preventing injustices and promoting mediation in Gahini Sector, Kayonza District.

The initiative, which kicked off on February 10, 2025, focuses on helping people understand and respect the law. Many of the concerns raised by local residents during the launch were centered around people who refuse to accept court decisions, including situations where people’s properties are being sold at auction as a result of unresolved legal issues.

One of the key issues identified was a lack of understanding among some citizens about the role of bailiffs and how court orders work. Kamana Jean Claude, a resident of Gahini, explained that some community members reject court decisions simply because they don’t know the law or have misconceptions about how the legal process works.

“When people lose a case, they often feel like there’s still a chance to change things,” Kamana said. “We need to educate them that the decision is final, and they must follow through.”

Nirere Madeleine also encouraged the community to embrace peaceful resolutions through mediation. “If you face a disagreement, consider mediation,” she advised. “It can save time, prevent unnecessary costs, and allow you to focus on personal growth instead of getting stuck in endless legal battles.” She emphasized the importance of trusting in the decisions of legal bodies and avoiding unnecessary delays. “Once you lose a case in court, the process is over. It’s time to move forward and implement the decision.”

The Ombudsman further stressed the importance of standing up against corruption and abuse. “If you see someone asking for a bribe or mistreating others, don’t hesitate to report it,” she urged. “It’s your responsibility to make sure these wrongdoings are exposed.”

The program will run through February 13, 2025, and aims to bring about a change in mindset by empowering citizens with knowledge of their rights and the law.
